Spectrum Engineering

Clarity across
the spectrum.

Understand and manage the electromagnetic environment your operations depend on.

Our expertise

Make informed spectrum decisions.

Expression provides spectrum engineering and technical analysis for federal missions. Our teams support frequency selection and management, modeling, testing, and long-term planning.

We help agencies assess electromagnetic conditions and address interference challenges. Engineering, analysis, and planning support more effective use of spectrum resources.

From RF parameters
to operational decisions.

Evaluate propagation, receiver compatibility, and assignment constraints with explicit assumptions and traceable calculations.

01

Link budgets & coverage analysis

Can the planned radio link provide enough received power for the required service?

Inputs
Frequency, range, effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP), antenna gains, feeder losses, receiver sensitivity, terrain, and clutter.
Analysis
Calculate received power and link margin. Use a free-space baseline to check the budget, then assess terrain, obstruction, fading, and antenna assumptions appropriate to the operating environment.
Engineering outputs
Link budgets, path profiles, coverage estimates, and sensitivity studies that show which assumptions drive the margin.
02

Co-site interference & compatibility

Can nearby transmitters and receivers operate together within the required protection limits?

Inputs
Transmit spectra and power, antenna patterns and isolation, frequency separation, receiver selectivity, blocking performance, and operating schedules.
Analysis
Evaluate co-channel and adjacent-channel interference, coupling paths, and receiver overload. Compare individual and aggregate interference against the protection criteria for the affected receiver.
Engineering outputs
Transmitter–receiver compatibility matrices, interference margins, and tradeoffs in filtering, frequency separation, antenna placement, and operating constraints.
03

Frequency assignment & certification support

What technical evidence is needed to support spectrum coordination?

Inputs
Operating locations, frequency bands, emission characteristics, occupied bandwidth, antenna parameters, power, and mission constraints.
Analysis
Assess candidate assignments against applicable allocations and incumbent compatibility. Reconcile equipment parameters and operating assumptions for agency coordination and certification review.
Engineering outputs
Frequency assignment data packages, electromagnetic compatibility analyses, and technical documentation supporting certification and coordination.
